Thank you for the music, suckers! How Spotify's Daniel Ek stooped even lower to take your money...

More lies from Daniel EkMore lies from Daniel EkThe good news is our campaign against the dishonest treatment of artists by Spotify is making a difference.

Daniel Ek has replaced his original lie that Spotify was an ethical alternative to illegal filesharing because artists got paid - they didn’t - with refreshing honesty on how he wants to screw artists that make him millions by demanding he shouldn’t have to pay artists to make millions off their work… Which lets face it, only appealed to thieving weasels like Daniel Ek…

Daniel Fridholm - Artist of the Week

Daniel FridholmDaniel FridholmRaised by bears in the wilderness of Minnesota (US) - Bears got divorced after a series of unlikely but morally enhancing adventures (such as how it is really wrong to bite one’s nails) - Moved to London at a young age, always remembering the deity of Prince (the Minnesotan state god) and created music that is entirely self produced, entirely lies, utterly morally defenseless and quite fun.

The aim is to fuck that ‘cheese’ idea of overlooked music and deconstruct it in a sort of Barthes way, for example - what if Deerhoof wrote Easy Lover? Eh?

This is what Daniel Fridholm is.Read more...

My Satellite - Artist of the Week

My SatelliteMy SatelliteMy Satellite is a Los Angeles based band comprised solely of singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Bryan Stage. In late 2009, My Satellite was born when Stage began to blend elements of post-rock, indie rock, and electronica to create a sound that is melancholy and yet uplifting. Lyrics that wander from thoughts on abandonment, to undeserved love, to acceptance of death lay a heavy heart upon a wall of layered instrumentation and vocal harmonies that move the listener into a world where seemingly opposed emotions occupy the same melody. Early in 2010, Telescopes became the first EP release for My SatelliteRead more...

iTunes continues to push past Walmart in music distribution

Apple has continued to gain market share among music distributors in the US, according to a Billboard report. Apple’s market share grew to 26.7 percent in 2009, up from 21.4 percent in the previous year.
Walmart still holds the second spot, although the company’s market share has continued to decline to 12.5 percent. Other retailers, such as Best Buy, showed similar lackluster numbers, as many moved to scale back floor space dedicated to CD sales.Read more...

EMI holding up arrival of Beatles on iTunes says Sir Paul...

Apple RecordsApple RecordsThis is just too funny…

The brainiacs at EMI, yes the same company that violated Pink Floyd’s contract and wishes by selling individual songs instead of whole albums and recently lost a court case over it, is holding up the arrival of The Beatles on iTunes so we can’t download individual songs, we gotta buy the whole album…

Oh EMI

SubMachena - Artist of the Week

SubMachenaSubMachenaBetween them, Robin Taylor-Firth and Rawle Bruce have played literally thousands of gigs over the last twenty years, from 50-seater bars to 50,000 fans at the Glastonbury and Reading Festivals. Their first collaboration, Olive, led to one of the best-selling records of the 90s (‘You’re Not Alone); whilst Robin’s work as keyboardist with Nightmares on Wax is a staple in the club scene, with platinum-seller LP ‘Smoker’s Delight’ its best-known work.

About the music
SubMachena Electro-dance with dub effects, Caribbean basslines, dark, heavy beats. Influenced by two-step. Ranges from a very traditional-style Jamaican dub reminiscent of Lee Scratch Perry to an intense, more contemporary take on trip-hop/bassline electro. Live show modifies the studio tracks with a focus on filling dancefloors.Read more...

Rosie And The Thorns - Artist of the Week

Rosie And The ThornsRosie And The ThornsThis week we go from Brazil to Australia with Rosie and the Thorns as our Artist of the Week.

As the only girl in cult surf band The Val Dusty Experiment, Rosie provided a sweetness to their raw folk-rock sound. Now that she’s gone solo, her own edges are starting to show. Rosie crafts her songs around simple riffs and melodies, letting the words hold their own. The album CRAZY TALK was recorded by Mick Wordley and released late 2009 on the Mixmasters label.
The sound? I hear shades of Sinead O’Conner but others describe her sound as Lucinda Williams singing with Band of Horses or Beth Orton fronting Crowded House. Rosie pushes folk-rock into alt-country territory with ringing melodies and addictive choruses. Everything old is new again!

I love the chorus on Crazy Talk, check it out:Read more...

Do you think the paper shredders will be working overtime at Spotify and Sony?

It has occurred to me that maybe Daniel Ek isn’t really that stupid after all…

I mean, when someone appears to be so incredibly incompetent {read more} that it is almost unbelievable… maybe it is? Maybe Mr. Ek and his sad song and dance routine about how he can’t make money paying artists {read more} is just a smokescreen to distract us.

If one of my personal heroes, Sir Richard Branson, can collude with British Airways to fix higher airfares…

What are the chances Spotify and the major labels might be colluding to avoid paying artists the money they would normally be entitled too?Read more...
