Breaking DRM for Fair Use might be legal...

A new court ruling on Friday could set a legal precedent that allows bypassing digital rights management (DRM) for fair use purposes. New Orleans circuit Judge Emilio Garza found that GE hadn’t violated the Digital Millennium Copyright Act by using hacked security dongles to repair uninterruptible power supplies from MGE UPS Systems as the goal itself was legal. While a jury fined GE $4.6 million for breaking copyright and misusing trade secrets, Judge Garza determined the DMCA hadn’t been broken, as using hacked items by itself didn’t constitute violating protection at the same time.Read more...

Piano Segundo - Artist of the Week

How about “Gonzo piano-noodling”, do they have that?’

In the offices of BlancoMusic.com, Piano Segundo and the label staff are trying to register the act’s music with the PPL. Standard admin stuff, but the drop-down list of genres is a bit restrictive. ‘Jazz, Dance, Erotic?’ All of the above. ‘Adult Contemporary?’ Is that a euphemism? ‘Bhangra’ No. Definitely not Bhangra.Read more...

This band is simply stunning. It was incredibly difficult to pick one song to feature as they are all so unique and enchanting. Botched Fairytale are Mariel McCormack on all vocals, percussion and instrumentation and Marie O’Hara on percussion and instrumentation. Founded in 2008, since then they have been working on their debuit album entitled Botched Fairytale. Thank you for the music, suckers! How Spotify's Daniel Ek stooped even lower to take your money...

More lies from Daniel EkMore lies from Daniel EkThe good news is our campaign against the dishonest treatment of artists by Spotify is making a difference.

Daniel Ek has replaced his original lie that Spotify was an ethical alternative to illegal filesharing because artists got paid - they didn’t - with refreshing honesty on how he wants to screw artists that make him millions by demanding he shouldn’t have to pay artists to make millions off their work… Which lets face it, only appealed to thieving weasels like Daniel Ek…

with a return to more lies…Read more...

Daniel Fridholm - Artist of the Week

Daniel FridholmDaniel FridholmRaised by bears in the wilderness of Minnesota (US) - Bears got divorced after a series of unlikely but morally enhancing adventures (such as how it is really wrong to bite one’s nails) - Moved to London at a young age, always remembering the deity of Prince (the Minnesotan state god) and created music that is entirely self produced, entirely lies, utterly morally defenseless and quite fun.

The aim is to fuck that ‘cheese’ idea of overlooked music and deconstruct it in a sort of Barthes way, for example - what if Deerhoof wrote Easy Lover? Eh?

This is what Daniel Fridholm is.Read more...

My Satellite - Artist of the Week

My SatelliteMy SatelliteMy Satellite is a Los Angeles based band comprised solely of singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Bryan Stage. In late 2009, My Satellite was born when Stage began to blend elements of post-rock, indie rock, and electronica to create a sound that is melancholy and yet uplifting. Lyrics that wander from thoughts on abandonment, to undeserved love, to acceptance of death lay a heavy heart upon a wall of layered instrumentation and vocal harmonies that move the listener into a world where seemingly opposed emotions occupy the same melody. Early in 2010, Telescopes became the first EP release for My SatelliteRead more...
